These days, prospective employers want to know a lot about new employees as they understand the level of investment that they're planning to make. As part of their investigations, they will frequently call for a pre-employment checkup, and if they've asked you to undertake this, you may not be sure of the procedure ahead. What do you need to do in advance and what should you anticipate on the day that you visit the general practitioner?
Making Preparations
Firstly, it's important not to be apprehensive but make sure that you are prepared, nonetheless. You will have a specific appointment with the doctor and should remember to be there with plenty of time in hand. You don't want to have to reschedule due to unexpected traffic, for example.
When you do get to the facility, expect to fill in quite a bit of paperwork, so bring your reading glasses if necessary. If you've never been here before, you may be asked for photo identification so the doctor's staff can check that everything is right.
Wear comfortable and loosefitting clothing, but please make sure that you don't wear any work clothes that may need to be washed and remember to freshen up before you leave for your appointment.
The Process
A medical examination will typically take more than an hour to complete and you may interact with several different staff members, including the doctor.
To begin with, a nurse is likely to check your vital figures, before measuring your height and weight. You will be asked to take a vision test and may need to produce a urine sample at this stage. This is typically tested for the presence of elevated sugar levels, which might indicate early diabetes, but it will also be checked for kidney or bladder problems. If your employer has specifically asked, an alcohol or drug screening may be part of this process, as well. Finally, your hearing may be tested using sophisticated equipment in a special area, to make sure that all readings are accurate.
Question Time
Your doctor will review all information that you filled in earlier on and may have some specific questions as a consequence. They'll want to know about any previous conditions, before the full medical examination begins.
The Exam
For the exam, you can expect an examination of the abdomen and an analysis of your flexibility, in particular the back, spinal column and limbs. Should any abnormalities be found, then they will be noted and advice given in relation to any follow-up, if needed.
Finishing up
Once the doctor has completed his or her work, you will be able to get dressed and leave. In due course, the results will be transmitted to your prospective employer, who will then notify you of the outcome.
